Petroleum coke, or petcoke, is one of many valuable products made during the oil refining process. Refiners produce petcoke at about 140 locations around the world by breaking down or “cracking” large hydrocarbon molecules after the manufacture of finished products such as gasoline, jet fuels and lubricating oils. The resulting material is a complex mixture of mostly elemental carbon with inorganic and organic compounds that can be used as a fuel or feedstock in a wide range of important industrial and manufacturing processes.
